You can never step in the same river twice.

I've always been a big fan of the cover of this book. Philosophy is about understanding things. It's about understanding important things --the MOST important things. Forgetting doctrine and formalism, that's basically the purpose of life, isn't it? To reach a better understanding of things -- the world, human societies, history, the people around us, ourselves. But in our attempts to understand things, we have to recognize that human beings are fallible, and whatever understanding we accomplish will be partial and imperfect. We can closer to understanding things as they really are, but we can never actually hope to get there. Getting at truth is an impossible goal. Whenever you get close, it recedes just over the horizon.
