President Bush just submitted to Congress a proposed $2.77 trillion budget. That's a 2% increase over last years $2.71 trillion. Under this plan, next year's projected budget deficit would be a record $423 billion.

I think that all the numbers associated with the budget and the budget deficit should always be written out fully, just so people understand the scope of the problem.

So here's this year's proposed budget: $2,770,000,000,000.00

Here's next year's proposed deficit: $423,000,000,000.00

And, according to the U.S. National Debt Clock, the federal government is $8,209,061,298,425.68 in the red.

Now, Bush claims that the deficit will be halved by 2009, but really, he's full of shit. Republicans used to be the party of fiscal responsibility, or at least they used to say they were, but once you get the keys to Daddy's car, it's kind of hard to stop yourself. I suppose it's human psychology ... I can understand that.

I don't know anything at all about finance or economics, or what the potential impacts of such a large deficit and debt are, but I'm also not an idiot. At some point, debt becomes unmanageable ... even if you are the U.S government.

Just in case your're interested, average citizens like you and me can make contributions to reduce the deficit by mailing a check to:

ATTN DEPT G
BUREAU OF THE PUBLIC DEBT

PARKERSBURG, WV 26106-2188

So, if your into quixotic shit like that, feel free.
