Crime & Punishment

Here is a very sad story that I observed.

An 82 year old man sold his house for $300,000. Lord knows, he probably bought the thing forty or more years ago for $20,000. With this windfall, he planned on living out his final days in comfort and in helping his grandkids go to college. For convenience's sake, he puts his brother's name on the account.

Then it all fell apart for him. His sister in law decided to steal her brother in law's money. She forged the brother's name on some checks, and over the course of two months she completely emptied the account. Thankfully, she got caught. Unfortunately, the money is completely gone. She gambled away $300,000 at Dover horse track. To make restitution, the woman has offered to give the man her $407 per month social security payment ... that's all she's got.

This really fucking sucks. The man was in court on Friday, and he said that he doesn't eat sometimes, and if it weren't for the church he might not eat at all. He went from being completely free to live his final days however he wanted to being completely dependent on others.
